Who Enters Writing Contests?
Writers who are looking to compete with other writers. Sometimes people enter contests purely for the challenge of seeing if they can come out on top. Other times, people are hoping to win in order to add the achievement to their literary portfolio or their resume. Winning awards can be one of the things that impresses someone enough to move you on to next steps such as scheduling an interview with you or deciding to give you a trial run so you can prove you have what it takes to manage an entire project.
What are the benefits of entering a writing contest?
As stated above, if you’re looking for some bona fides that mark you as a strong writer, contests are one avenue for achieving that. Even if you don’t win the top prize, getting things like second place or an honorable mention are still noteworthy. Remember that writing contests often have hundreds, if not thousands, of entrants. So, even as third place, you’ve made yourself stand out significantly.
When should I enter a writing contest?
The only thing restricting your participation in any writing contest is (1) having an eligible piece to enter and (2) having the personal eligibility to enter, such as being a legal adult, being able to afford an entry fee, and so on. Otherwise, it’s up to you which contests you want to enter and when. Writing competitions take place all throughout the year, all over the world. With the vast majority, if not all, allowing for submissions and winnings to be handled electronically, you can enter contests facilitated by groups in countries that you’ve never even been to before!
