Do I need a Library of Congress Control Number?

Posted on September 7, 2021September 7, 2021 by Tenesha L. Curtis, M.S.S.W.

Absolutely not.

Some authors choose to get one, some don’t. It has no bearing on the quality or success of your piece. Many commercially published books don’t have one. No big deal. If you have a desire to get one for sentimental reasons, feel free. You can head to the Library of Congress website and sign up for an account. Remember that these numbers are pre-assigned, so you’ll need to request the number BEFORE you publish the book. It often takes less than a week to be assigned one, so putting in the request a month before you release your book should suffice in most cases.
