Writerwerx University’s fifth short story contest is coming to a close in less than a week!
If you haven’t submitted your short story yet (anything goes as long as it’s 2,000 English words long or less!), here are some reasons you don’t want to miss out on this year’s competition.
Biggest Prize Yet
The contest has been going on long enough that it’s time for an upgrade! This year’s first place prize is not $100, not $400, not $800, but a cool $1,000 USD! That can buy a whole lot of books, pens, paper, or whatever else you need to keep your writing career on track.
And let’s not forget the editorial services credits awarded every year! This time, whoever wins first place will receive a whopping $3,000 in editorial service credits. For most shorter pieces, that will more than pay for services such as manuscript evaluations and developmental editing.
Cap Feathers!
Winning awards and accomplishing other literary feats is always a solid way to call attention to yourself as a writer. This is information you can use to help with speaking engagement proposals, bulk up your LinkedIn profile, or even just throw in the face of someone who said your writing sucks (we won’t judge you for getting some payback!).
Social Media Fodder
If you have a social media profile on which you need content to share with your followers, being part of the contest can do that, whether you win something or not. You can share our posts about contest updates and deadlines, share your hopes for the contest results, show your audience snippets of what you wrote in a series of posts, and even share your prizes after you actually win something. It’s as simple as heading to WinItWrite.com and submitting your short story before the deadline.
Self-Esteem Booster
Writing can be a difficult and lonely path sometimes. So submitting to smaller contests (we normally have just under 100 entries, so every story you submit is at least a 1% chance that you’ll win!), is often a great way to boost your confidence if you win. Even if you don’t, the anticipation of the results and being part of something larger than yourself can be a great temporary positive focus anyway. Have fun getting your fans, friends, and family to cheer you on.
Even if you don’t win, consider how many people in your shoes were too afraid to even try. How many awesome writers out there are missing their moment because they are operating through fear instead of confidence or even just a willingness to experiment and see what happens? From the moment you submit your piece, you’re putting yourself on a markedly different path from the rest of those people, and that’s something to be proud of!
