You can do something poorly for decades. You can do something to an extremely high level of fidelity even though you’ve only been doing it for a few months. One of the ways that new writers can get taken advantage of is by using the amount of time someone has been working in a particular field as a reason that they “must” be excellent at what they do. While this is often true, it isn’t true 100% of the time.
For instance, someone can have been a social media specialist (supposedly) for decades, but their profiles have less than 100 followers and little / no engagement on each of their posts. So they’re not lying when they say they’ve been managing people’s social media profiles or providing instruction on social media marketing for twenty years, but that doesn’t mean they are getting the kinds of results you’re looking for from a social media manager. It can be helpful to make longevity a single factor among many you consider when vetting a professional before you hire them. But focusing only on how long they have been in business can be risky.
